Reflection on feedback

I agree with my tutor that the covers photography and typography of last assignment do not work alone. Maybe It was what disturbed me. The colour cover was build as first and the others I just adjusted to it to be a series.

At the judging book exercise I wanted to avoid use Helvetica because it seemed to me a little dull in it :-).

The birthday poster I have made simple and I have asked myself why this exercise is here. Now I know that I maybe did not understood it well :-). The stand alone piece of information. Maybe I need to improve my English.

I wanted a trustable Chance logo which gives reader a reliable feeling and the logo from iPad seemed to a little bit childish. I agree that the feeling in the last logo is more corporate than friendly after your feedback.

Other modules: I always wanted to make short films, so my next module probably will be the digital film production which is suitable for Creative Arts. I am looking forward for the next levels of graphic design. I am also thinking about printmaking courses. I have read the sample and it looks friendly to me as a journey to unconscious. I was also thinking about the illustration course but I had feeling it is close to graphic design when I saw some illustration blogs.

I have enjoyed the course, the basics of design are great journey across colour, typography, layout and I really looking forward for the next levels. Thank you for the feedbacks which helped me understand how important is the critique stage.

Part Five - The end

I have really enjoyed this part. Mostly the play with grids. It is amazing how a simple grid can turn the design in ordered world with rules. Also I liked the information graphics but my works were a little bit angular and I realized here that I should play more with curves in design. It took me a long time for all exercises because I sometimes lost in my ideas generation step. For example with the poster announcing the sing coarse. I produced several ideas about it. I spent long time to judge them and at the end I decided to throw them all in basket and one idea pushed my mind: illustration of figure with microphone. I was so captivated with black version that I forgot that there is request for low-budget printed version. After a few weeks I made an inverse version.

Also with the logo exercise for The French Hen restaurant. I struggled with the name HEN. I could not imagine nothing more than Hen :-). I had problems to bring down an idea which does not represent it. At this exercise I notices how long time I needed for a cultivation of the final idea. It was really hard not to be hurry in doing design.

Final work is something where I realized how the brief can influence on my creativity. I had feeling that my hands are banded. I was worry about the design because it should be for children and young people. It was not clear for what age level it is even after research step.

I felt great when my friend looked at my board (where I have displayed the covers) and he said "hey it is nice covers for children books". Still I am not sure if I am right in design for the young people. Finally I finished the excellent course which opened my eyes and gave me the basics of wonderful world of communication, typography, colour and layout which we have around us everyday.

Visualisation in reality

I have printed the covers and clipped them on a book which was similar in dimensions. I like the covers more when I saw them on a real book. I also put them on a shelf to see how they look next to other books. I like the results.

Final version

The time is running so quickly and the dead line is coming and I am not satisfied with the results. I much more like the cover book from earlier exercise (book store visualization). Maybe it is because I am worry whether the design is suitable for young people. Maybe the research step was not so deeply as should be. Where is the edge between children and young people age. I think the design should work pretty good for children.

I had feeling that there was missing some element which support the title of the book. I added the withe line in the middle of the design. Even the design is a little bit overloaded I think it still works good.

I wanted to connect all design as they look as series. I added the landscape in to the Colour book. There was a question if the balloons are necessary in the design.

I have completed mood-boards of the series of the books. For the photographs I used the illustration of the animals and combined them with real photographs and framed them.

Assigment 5: typography moodboard

I continued in the colorful feeling way of the design with illustrations. As a typography introduction I wanted to use animals for expressing their character as power, danger, fast, tall and big. I used the clouds here as connecting element, which I wanted to use also for photographs. I let here the serif font as it is very readable and authoritative font for buyers (parents of children and maybe young people).

Assignment five: visualization

The main point in this assignment is for what age of reader the design is. The brief says children and young people. I think this design works good for children but for young people?  When I read the article about typefaces for book design for children I am not sure if the font I use is appropriate but I like it and it looks good in the cloud for this moment. For this reason I have made also a version with Century Schoolbook.
