A book Grid systems by Josef Brockmann

I have bought a Gris systems book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Grid-Systems-Graphic-Design-Typographers/dp/3721201450/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313914461&sr=8-1

It is a little bit expensive book but it is easy and understandable reading one. If I can I should recommend to my fellow students.

Some notions from chapters in this book:

Typography:
There is short introduction into typography. There are typeface alphabets per sheet: Garamond, Caslon, Baskerville, Bodoni, Clarendon, Berthold, Times, Helvetica, Univers. For me it is to compare differences between Berthold, Helvetica and Univers.

Width of column:
According to a well-known empirical rule there should be 7 words per line for a text of any length. So as to keep the area light and open in appearance, we have to determine the leading.
Every difficulty standing in the reader's way means loss of quality in communication and memorability.

Margin proportions:
A well-proportioned margin can enhance the pleasure of reading. If they are too small the reader feels that the page is overfull and his fingers unconsciously jumps from reading area when he holds the book, magazine etc.

Construction of the type area:
Whether the printed page as a whole looks harmonious and is pleasant to read depends on the clarity of the typeface, its size, the length of the lines, the leading of the lines and the size of margins.
A designer should bear in mind when sketching new grid:
1. Should the type area consist of one, two or more columns? The size of the typeface depends on the width of the column.
2. What kind of information is to be accommodated in the type area? Are the texts to have annotations or footnotes? Do the texts include pictures and captions?
3. If illustrations are to be combined with the text, how many pictures are there altogether?
4. How many are to be large and how many small?
